Winter twilight

Twilight: between wakefulness and sleep, when day’s cruel light is put to rest and peace is restored.

That hour or so when dimming light fashions eucalypts into vessels on a fathomless sea.

This is the time when the world’s coldness yields to evening’s chill. Time to gather family, warm ourselves, collect our thoughts.

Revolving through blue, we mark day’s passing with lighted candles. We make a meal to comfort, and fill ourselves with softness to smooth day’s jagged edges.

As we lean towards sleep, the passengers of those mysterious ships begin to silently disembark.
